NMHS ends United Healthcare Medicare Advantage plans – selfemployed.com
North Mississippi Health Services (NMHS) has ended its contract with United Healthcare for certain Medicare Advantage plans. The change took effect on June 1. The decision comes after more than a year of talks between NMHS and United Healthcare.
NMHS operates eight hospitals and over 70 clinics in North Mississippi. United Healthcare is the nation’s most profitable health insurance company. About 17,000 United Healthcare Medicare Advantage members live in NMHS’s service area.
Most of them are existing patients, said Wally Davis, NMHS’s vice president of payor strategy and partnerships. Other United Healthcare plans will still be in-network at NMHS. These include commercial and employer-sponsored, Marketplace, Medicaid, and CHIP plans.
The change will also apply to Medicaid-required Dual Special Needs Medicare Advantage plans. NMHS ended the agreement because Medicare Advantage inpatient claims were often delayed or denied, Davis said. The issue has gotten worse since NMHS first raised concerns last year.
In May, 42% of inpatient claims at North Mississippi Medical Center-Tupelo were initially denied. This is up from 17% in February 2024.
The overturn rate has stayed around 85% since last year. “We continued conversations about the core problem, which has been the denial percentage itself, but we never really received a clearly defined response from United as to why those denials were occurring,” Davis said. United Healthcare suggested extending the current contract to keep talking, said Tracy Carr, a spokesperson for the company.
“Unfortunately, NMHS refused,” Carr said. Patients with United Healthcare Group Retiree Medicare Advantage plans will still be able to get services at NMHS locations. These plans offer out-of-network benefits.
Patients’ share of the cost will be the same as if they were part of the network for some or all services, according to Carr. United Healthcare members who are in the middle of treatment with an NMHS provider for a serious or complex condition may be able to keep getting covered services for a period of time, Carr said. Davis encourages patients to contact Medicare to discuss options for changing their Medicare Advantage enrollment.
This includes during the special enrollment period. Medicare’s open enrollment period is from Oct. 15 to Dec.
7. There is an additional open enrollment period for those already enrolled in Medicare Advantage Plans from Jan. 1 to March 31.

SGMC Health Announces New Leadership for Stroke Program – SGMC Health
SGMC Health is pleased to name Cole Seaton, DO, Emergency Medicine, and Roohi Farooq, MD, Neurology, as Co-Directors of the health system’s stroke program. In their leadership roles, Dr. Seaton and Dr. Farooq will work collaboratively to implement best practice guidelines and enhance SGMC Health’s high-quality stroke care for patients.
A stroke occurs when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain becomes blocked by a clot or bursts, causing brain cells to die. This can lead to long-term disability or even death. The most effective treatments focus on restoring blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible. Recognizing stroke symptoms early and seeking immediate medical attention can significantly improve outcomes and recovery.
SGMC Health serves as the area’s only accredited Primary Stroke Center (PSC). This designation means SGMC Health is equipped to handle a wide range of stroke conditions, provide acute therapies, and admit patients to a specialized stroke unit for ongoing care. Additionally, PSCs often serve as resource centers for other medical facilities, offering expertise, diagnostic tools, and advanced treatment options to improve stroke care across the region.
SGMC Health has received national recognition from the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines award for excellence in stroke treatment for more than a decade. This underscores its ongoing commitment to delivering cutting-edge stroke care and improving patient outcomes.
“Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a major contributor to disability in the United States,” said Pankaj Agrawal, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at SGMC Health. “With Dr. Seaton and Dr. Farooq leading our stroke program, SGMC Health continues to be at the forefront of advanced stroke care, ensuring that our community has access to the best treatment when time is critical.”
Dr. Seaton earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Georgia and completed his residency at Texas A&M University. He is board-certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has served as Medical Director of the EMS program since 2022. His extensive experience in emergency medicine and pre-hospital care will be instrumental in optimizing rapid stroke response and treatment protocols.
Dr. Farooq completed her medical education at Deccan College of Medical Sciences and her residency at the SIU-Neuroscience Institute. With a strong background in neurology, she brings a wealth of expertise in stroke management and recovery, ensuring patients receive the highest standard of neurological care.

Gen-Z adults with a fitness routine are nearly twice as likely to have a financial plan as those who do not exercise, a survey has found.
The survey commissioned by credit information company Experian indicated that, overall, young adults are switched on to their finances.
The research among 18 to 25-year-olds found that more than nine in 10 (92%) of those who take steps to keep fit have a financial plan, as do just over half (54%) of those who do not exercise.
Those who exercise regularly have £5,080 in savings on average, which is around double the amounts put away by those who do not exercise regularly (£2,511).
“Exercising regularly” was defined as those who said they exercised once a week or more.
Experian partnered with endurance runner Russ Cook, also known as the Hardest Geezer, to urge young adults to put the same drive into money management as they do towards personal fitness goals.
Mr Cook said: “The mindset I use for my runs – discipline, small wins, getting up and doing it again – is the same one I use when thinking about money.”
The survey also found that half (50%) of young adults feel “traditional” financial goals, such as home ownership, are impossible.
More than half (55%) of those surveyed said they are having to delay moving out of their family home.
Nearly half (46%) of young adults said that being able to afford shorter-term ambitions such as holidays, travel and festivals is more important to them than long-term financial security.
Around fifth (22%) are focused on staying out of debt, while nearly three in 10 (28%) want to save enough to take some time off work to travel, according to the survey among 2,000 people aged 18 to 25 across the UK carried out by Opinium in June.
John Webb, credit expert at Experian, said: “The link between physical and financial fitness is powerful, and through this campaign, we want to empower young people to apply the discipline they already show in their personal lives to their money, too.”
Sebrina McCullough, director of external relations at Money Wellness, said: “We see young people setting clear goals and tracking their progress. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about staying consistent. Just like training for a marathon, getting financially fit takes discipline, patience and self-belief. And Gen-Z are proving they’ve got all three.”

Technomic's Take: Roller-Grill Trends – CSP Daily News
Search CSP Daily News
CHICAGO — The roller grill, arguably the most conventional, everyday foodservice fixture in convenience stores, remains a bright spot in the c-store food category. The number of roller-grill items is up year over year, as operators continue to expand upon the format and offer more variety.
Technomic's new Q4 2017 C-Store MarketBrief study analyzes its exclusive Consumer Brand Metrics data to reveal the latest consumer preferences for the roller grill. What's driving—and deterring—their purchase of roller-grill fare? Based on what the frequent c-store customer is saying, what can retailers do to boost interest in the roller grill?
Read on to gauge consumer sentiment about roller-grill offerings …
Nearly two-thirds (64%) of c-store consumers who purchase roller-grill items due so for snacking—the highest response given compared to any other daypart or occasion. This suggests that roller-grill purchases are largely driven by cravings and impulse buys. New or unique limited-time offerings (LTOs) on the roller grill could do more to spur purchases for snacks, especially among a younger consumer base.
Want to increase roller-grill purchases? Boost the freshness perception, consumers say. More than half of consumers (53%) call roller-grill items that are "made fresh daily" their top purchase driver, while 41% say that to increase their spend, c-stores must provide roller-grill offerings that have a fresh appearance.
Half of the consumers surveyed (50%) say that cleanliness is the top attribute they look for at the roller-grill station. In addition to showcasing variety, flavor and abundant options for snacking, customers expect to see a clean and sanitary area in order to positively impact their perception of the roller grill.
